Fun Useful Pet Tricks
For Dogs:
Beginner:
- Sit: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose, then move your hand up, allowing their head to follow the treat and causing their bottom to lower.
- Stay: Once your dog can sit, ask them to stay by holding your palm out in front of you. Take a step back and reward them for staying in place.
- Shake Hands: Have your dog sit. Lift one of its paws, say "shake," and give them a treat.
- Come: Call your dog's name followed by "come." When they come to you, reward them with a treat and lots of praise.
Intermediate:
- Roll Over: Start with your dog in a lying-down position. Move a treat from their nose toward their shoulder. They should follow the treat and roll over.
- Play Dead: With your dog lying down, say "bang" (or any command you like) and use a treat to guide them onto their side.
- Fetch: Use a toy your dog loves, throw it, and command "fetch." Encourage them to bring it back and reward them when they do.
- Heel: Practice walking with your dog at your side. Reward them for staying close and paying attention to you.
For Cats:
Beginner:
- Sit: Hold a treat above their head and move it slightly back, so they have to sit to keep their eyes on it.
- High Five: Hold a treat in your hand and let the cat sniff it. Then, lift it slightly so the cat has to reach up with their paw. Reward them when they make contact.
- Come: Use a treat or their favorite toy. Call their name and reward them when they come to you.
- Touch: Teach your cat to touch a specific object with their paw or nose. Use a clicker or a treat to mark the correct behavior.
Intermediate:
- Jump Through a Hoop: Start with the hoop on the ground. Guide your cat through with a treat and gradually raise the hoop over time.
- Fetch: Use a small, lightweight toy and throw it. Encourage your cat to bring it back.
- Sit Up: Hold a treat just above their head, encouraging them to sit up on their hind legs.
- Spin: Use a treat to guide your cat in a circle, saying "spin." Reward them when they complete the circle.
